Continuing Medical Education (CME) is a set of educational activities that help healthcare professionals maintain and improve their knowledge, skills, and performance. CME is also known as Continuing Education (CE) or continuing professional development (CPD).

CME is important because it:

Benefits patients and the public’s health
Helps healthcare professionals maintain their licenses and certifications
CME can take many forms, including: Face-to-face courses, Seminars, Grand rounds, Reading journals and texts, and Online CME.
Some states require physicians to maintain a certain number of CME credits each year to keep their medical licenses. Most hospitals also require physicians to have a certain number of CME credits to remain credentialed to see patients.
